Frequently asked questions

Everything people usually ask before their first upload, including how PDFBell actually works under the hood.

Is PDFBell really free?

Yes. Every tool is completely free, with no usage limit, no watermark on your output, and no premium tier. PDFBell doesn't ask for a credit card or an account to use any tool.

Do you upload my files to a server?

No. Every PDFBell tool runs entirely in your browser using pdf-lib and pdf.js — your file is read and processed locally on your device and is never transmitted to our servers. See our Privacy Policy for the full technical explanation.

Is there a file size limit?

There's no hard limit enforced by PDFBell itself. Larger files (roughly 10 MB and up) are automatically processed in a background Web Worker to keep the page responsive, but practical performance ultimately depends on your own device's memory and processing power rather than a cap we impose.

What file formats does PDFBell support?

PDFBell works with PDF files for tools like Merge, Sign, Crop, Split, and Organize, and with JPG or PNG images for JPG to PDF. PDF to PNG and PDF to JPG convert PDF pages into image files. Each tool page lists exactly which formats it accepts.

What's the “Ding” sound, and can I turn it off?

It's a short synthesized chime that plays when a tool finishes processing your file — a small, deliberate confirmation that the job is done, generated with Web Audio rather than an audio file. There's a sound toggle in the site header that turns it off instantly, and your choice is remembered on your next visit.

Which browsers does PDFBell work in?

PDFBell works in current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, on both desktop and mobile. Because processing happens in your browser rather than on a server, you'll need a reasonably modern browser with JavaScript enabled.

Is PDFBell related to pdfcompressor.cc?

Yes. Both sites are built and run by the same maker. pdfcompressor.cc focuses specifically on PDF compression; PDFBell covers the wider everyday PDF toolbox. Read more on our About page.

Is PDFBell open source?

PDFBell's own site code isn't open source, but the PDF engines it's built on — pdf-lib and pdf.js — are open-source projects, which is part of what makes fully browser-based processing possible without you having to trust a private server with your files.

Do I need to create an account?

No. There's no sign-up, no login, and no account of any kind — open any tool page and start using it right away.

Will you add more PDF tools?

PDFBell already covers 12 of the most common PDF tasks: merge, sign, convert, crop, delete pages, organize, rotate, split, extract, and compress. We keep an eye on what people search for and ask about via Contact — if there's a tool you need that's missing, let us know.
