What does signing a PDF here actually do?
PDFBell's sign PDF tool lets you sign PDF documents online without installing software or creating an account. Draw your signature with a mouse or touchscreen, type your name in one of several handwriting-style fonts, or upload a photo of your signature — then drag it into place on the page and download a signed copy. It's a fast way to sign pdf free of charge whenever you need to initial a form, approve a document, or countersign an agreement.
Everything happens in this browser tab: pdf.js renders the page for preview, your signature is drawn on a canvas, and pdf-lib places the signature image on the page. Neither the document nor the signature is sent to a server, and both are held only in memory until you close the tab.
You can sign pdf online with any of three methods. Draw a freehand signature with your mouse, trackpad, or finger — the canvas smooths every stroke so it looks natural. Type your name and choose from several handwriting-style fonts if you'd rather not draw. Or upload a scan or photo of a signature you already use, with an optional one-click white-background removal so it sits cleanly on the page. Whichever method you choose, drag the signature into position and resize it, on any page of a multi-page document.
One thing this tool does not do: create a certified, legally binding electronic signature under eIDAS, ESIGN, or UETA. It places a visual signature image on the page, which is exactly what most everyday business and personal paperwork needs — but for contracts that specifically require a certified e-signature with an audit trail, use a qualified e-signature provider instead. Sign PDF limits and edge cases
- A visual signature only. The signature is placed on the page as an image, with no certificate, timestamp or audit trail, so it is not an eIDAS, ESIGN or UETA certified electronic signature (see the notice above).
- Once you download, the signature is part of the page content. It cannot be moved or removed in the signed copy, so keep your original file and sign again from it if something needs to change.
- Typed signatures use one of four handwriting-style fonts and are turned into an image before they are placed, so the signature is not selectable text in the signed PDF.
- Signature uploads must be PNG or JPG. "Remove white background" makes plain white pixels transparent, so a signature photographed on shaded or patterned paper may not come out clean.
- This tool signs; it does not fill in forms. Form fields in the PDF are not detected or filled, only a signature image is placed over the page.
- A PDF that needs a password to open is rejected. A PDF that opens without a password but carries editing restrictions (a permissions password) is also refused with a clear message, because PDFBell cannot decrypt files and the signed copy would come out blank or unreadable; remove the restriction in the app that created it, then try again.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a legally binding electronic signature?
No. PDFBell creates a visual signature — pixels placed on the page — not a certified electronic signature under eIDAS, ESIGN, or UETA. It's suitable for everyday business and personal documents; for contracts that specifically require a certified e-signature with an audit trail, use a qualified e-signature provider instead.
Can I sign more than one page?
Yes. Create your signature once, then navigate to any page and click “Add to this page” to place it there — you can place it on as many pages as you need before downloading.
What image formats can I upload for my signature?
PNG and JPG images are supported. Turn on “Remove white background” to automatically make a plain white background transparent, so your signature blends into the page.
Can I redo my signature if I don't like it?
Yes. Clear the drawing and draw again, retype your name in a different style, or choose a different image — nothing is committed until you click Sign & Download.
Can I move or remove the signature after downloading?
No. The downloaded file has the signature baked into the page. Before you click Sign & Download you can drag, resize and remove placements freely; after that, start again from your original PDF.
